THE NEED - TRANSPORTATION
- 2006 - 13 focus groups, identification of needs
- Kids and Community Visioning Day, transportation identified
as one of the most common barriers for parents
- Community-based survey
WHAT IS THE RIDESHARE PROGRAM?
- provides low-cost and convenient transportation
- helps families to feel more included
- designed for parents with young children and expectant mothers
- If a referred family has a medical appointment or is going grocery
shopping, the Rideshare Co-ordinator will be contacted, who will
then arrange a ride for the family from a volunteer driver
- designed as a service to fill in gaps, not to duplicate existing
services
PURPOSE OF THE RIDESHARE PILOT PROGRAM
- evaluation and further development of best practices
- to obtain feedback from riders and drivers that relates
to program design
- to seek out funding opportunities for the full version
of the Program
DESCRIPTION OF THE RIDESHARE PILOT PROGRAM
- 100% financed by the Parent Advisory Committee
- operates at 5% of full capacity
- operates for 3 months (October-December of 2007)
SPECIFICS OF THE RIDESHARE PILOT PROGRAM
- 50 rides per month
- 6 families
- 4 volunteer drivers
- Rideshare Co-ordinator position – Volunteer PAC member
- car seats – riders must provide and install
- rider referrals from child and family-serving organization
- riders must have children under the age of 6, and be attending
medical, agency-based appointments or going grocery shopping or
to food banks within the city limits
- $2.00 fee for a round-trip ride
- rides are booked two days in advance
- 2 rides per family per week
GOVERNANCE OF THE PILOT RIDESHARE PROGRAM
- Rideshare Advisory Council
- 50% Parent Advisory Committee representation, 50% service
provider representation
- Responsibilities: to provide guidance to the Rideshare
Co-ordinator, assist in raising awareness of the Program, help in
planning for the expansion of the full Program.
- The Rideshare Co-ordinator will oversee the day-to-day
operations of the Program
EXPANSION OF RIDESHARE
- planning will take place to secure funding for the expansion
of the Program in 2008 over the next 3 months
Additions to the full Rideshare Program:
- Program will serve over 100 families per month
- Rideshare Co-ordinator will be a full-time, paid position
- Program will be expanded to include families with children
under the age of 15
- families will be able to receive up to 3 rides per week
- car seats will be purchased and installed in the cars of volunteer
drivers
