ABOUT THE RIDESHARE PROGRAM

The North Bay Parent Advisory Committee, with support from the North Bay Social Planning Council has launched the pilot version of a community transportation program, called Rideshare. Rideshare is a program that conveniently and affordably transports families to medical and agency-based appointments, as well as to grocery stores and food banks. This program is reliant upon the services of volunteer drivers who are reimbursed for their kilometrage. The pilot version of the Rideshare program is financed completely through the fundraising efforts of the Parent Advisory Committee, and will operate from October to December 2007, with plans to expand the program into 2008.

Kids and Community Project: A Parent Readiness Strategy, is part of a collaboration led by the Social Planning Network of Ontario, and is one of five taking place in communities across the province. Through Kids and Community, we have been engaging families with children aged zero to six years in a process that builds their capacity to support their children's learning and development and to shape strategies for broadening community support through community awareness and service development, which will welcome and include all children. The Project is funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada until 2008.

Since January 2006, we have been able to build parent-community partnerships that improve opportunities for children and their family members through community engagement, action, and reflection. Through parent engagement, we strive to alter some of the conditions that exist which exclude many groups and sub-populations, forcing them to the margins of society. The Kids and Community Parent Advisory Committee (P.A.C.) has been formed out of this Project, which consists of a group of dedicated parents, who have been actively engaged in creating positive change for all members of our community over the past year.
